Intune Harmony Antarctic is a land filled with beauty and with vast, untold opportunities for scientific exploration. In what might be called the Antarctic Experiment, 12 nations came together in 1959 to insure that this invaluable asset would be protected forevermore from exploitation and damage. This is the story of the Antarctic Treaty, a success story of cooperation and peace, that could provide many lessons on how people of various countries can work together to protect our environment.
No wars have been fought over Antarctica. In fact, quite the contrary, Antarctica has been a story of harmony and peace.

The terms of the 1959 treaty are simple and powerful.

All military activity, including weapons testing and disposal of the nuclear waste, is prohibited. Military personnel are allowed to be used in scientific research and any peaceful activity.
The treaty provides for continued freedom of scientific investigation and the free exchange of information, including frequent consultative meetings amongst member nations.
The treaty neither establishes, recognizes nor disputes any claims of territory in the Antarctic, but does prevent new claims from being asserted while the treaty is in force.
Free access for observation, including aerial inspection, or all stations, installations and equipment is granted to all states that follow the treaty, with a caveat that advance notice must be given for any use of military personnel.
Each state maintains jurisdiction over their own observers and scientists while recognizing this right in other states.
The 12 states which have signed the treaty are required to discourage any activity from any state that is contrary to the treaty. An additional provision ensures that any dispute shall be settled peacefully by all parties concerned, or through the International Court of Justice.
Through the decades, the Antarctic Treaty has shown to be very successful in its goal – ensuring that the interests of all humankind will be protected and that the riches of the Antarctic will continue to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes.
